When it comes to beverages, nothing beats water, and personally, I don’t drink much else.  However, if you’re searching for a guilt free reason to enjoy an occasional drink, keep reading.

Research shows that wine consumption has a big heart benefit because it increases levels of good HDL cholesterol in the blood and decreases clotting factors in the blood. One glass of wine per day for women can reduce the risk of both heart attack and stroke.  Better yet…  now, a new study shows that you can reap similar benefits from drinking beer as you can from drinking wine.

A study from the Netherlands found that participants who drank beer with dinner for several weeks had lower homocysteine levels than the participants who drank wine or gin. High homocysteine levels are associated with the early onset of heart and vascular disease.

That’s not to encourage heavy drinking.  Drinking in excess has been associated with an increased risk of several serious health ailments, such as cancer, high blood pressure, and liver disease, but hey…  I needed a good excuse to share this (somewhat unhealthy, but very tasty) beer bread recipe.  Do you receive the same benefits by eating your beer?  Maybe.  Future recipes will be far more healthy so I hope you enjoy my momentary wandering away from the more nutritious eating habits.

Beer Bread

What You Need
3 cups of self-rising flour   ***IMPORTANT- DO NOT USE ALL PURPOSE FLOUR***
2 tablespoons of sugar
12 ounces beer (one can)

What You Do
Grease your loaf pan by either spraying it with non-stick spray or rubbing butter on it with a paper towel.  Measure out 3 cups of flour in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle the sugar on the top. Pour in about half the beer and mix.  (Do not drink the other half of the beer.)  When it’s pretty well mixed, slowly add the rest of the beer while continuing to mix.  When you’ve got a sloppy mess of goo, scrape the dough out into your loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes. The top will get golden brown and crispy when it's done. Remove your masterpiece from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes then dump it out of the pan. (If you leave the bread in the pan to cool completely the bottom may get soggy.)  If you’re really looking to splurge, brush the crust with melted butter to make it tender.

I’ve tried this recipe with Zima, and raspberry beer, and both turned out great.  Since I’m not a beer drinker, it’s a great way for me to use up any left over beer from parties.  Plus, my neighbors love me for bringing them fresh bread.
